Hiya, Matt..My birthday is actually the 23rd of August. You'll be surprised to hear that I am not a great fan of Searle. I think he is good, very good, but I find him a little bit "fluffy". Ilike more "cool" and abstract artists like Steinberg. Of the Muggeridge's PUNCH Magazine my hero always was Andre Francois.
Soon I'll post in oscartoons a German proto-Searle artist I discovered. You'll find it very curious.

Yes, I understand your position on Searle, it seems you favour artists whose line-work is as direct as possible, much as your own. No fussing around, straight from the noggin to the paper. I'm suitably intrigued by the German artist you mention-I'll look out for your post.
