I think this may be my favourite of all Rembrandts. I’ve returned to it many times since first seeing it as a teenager, when I remember being struck by the subtlety of the lighting, the shaft of sunlight described solely by the play of light and shade on Hendrickje’s skin and through the bold brushstroke folds of her shift. It is darker in my memory, though but I have noticed that modern digital cameras and phones often show more than is visible to the naked eye.
